A shuttered up derelict shop, squeezed into a tight lane down the side of this red sandstone tenement. Beautiful colours are revealed as the paint layers peel away and the frontage deteriorates. The charming cobbles of the original road in front are a lovely detail to this piece.

This painting is part of the series ‘Outbuildings’. Inspired by the mood and muted tones of old tinted photographs, daguerreotypes and colourised film, this body of work explores the theme of time and the conversation between the land and the layers of man-made structures upon it. Focussing on the spaces in between, ‘Outbuildings’ explores the architecture in the hidden parts of the urban landscape where time stands still.
